Our experience at the Scead Foundation has been eye-opening. While most of us did have experience with volunteer work, venturing into slums and actually talking to the people who lived there wasn't something that any of us had done. At first, the idea of approaching strangers and talking to them about something as personal as why they choose to not send their children to school was a task that we found quite daunting. But on actually interacting with the people in the slums we realized that they were nothing but eager to share their story with us. There was an ease with which they spoke about their lives that we did not expect to find and we found ourselves listening to the rapt with attention to them. I think it's also safe to say that we did go into the volunteer work with biases about how we may have to convince children about why education is important. But upon interacting with them we found that most of them were, in fact, enthusiastic about going to school and would li...

My Work with SCEAD Foundation Bangalore

Image
My  Interview with Daniel  Siju Thomas Daniel , Founder, SCEAD Foundation  Daniel has been an inspiration to the many volunteers who have been lucky enough to work under him. Tarshish Kurien with Daniel  He has been a visionary from the beginning. The roots of social work began to grow from the early age of 17 when he and his fellow college mates took turns to work with a government school named Banjara Palya on the outskirts of Bangalore, often bunking classes. They drew up a schedule: with a fixed timetable of who would bunk when in order to seamlessly visit the school and teach the underprivileged children and reinforce the importance of education. In a country such as India which has remained firmly behind other developed nations in spite of a huge wealth of natural resources and opportunities to innovate, Daniel’s SCEAD is paving the way for other such NGOs to continue their work and realise the dream of full literacy. India lags behin...

Summer school March/April 2017

Image
Summer school : we had great day,we all shared real life experience with kids. We all learnt soo much. First beginning with the survey we visited around 100-120houses. But were able to bring a couple of 10kids from the entire visit of 100houses. We analysed the reason why kids dint come to Aanganvaadi. We found that their parents beat them up inspite of our presence, their parents forced them to work with them in the field or elsewhere.  But apart from this we see that the kids love coming to school as we learnt that there were few kids who motivated each other to join them. There was a lot of positive energy among them as they showed lot of enthusiasm in learning. We asked numericals, resite alphabet in order and pointed out few pictures of animals ans fruits and asked them its names and we distributed chocolates. The entire experience was amazing and we all enjoyed it.... SCEAD volunteers April 2017

Our volunteers tirelessly visit the slums to share information and increase awareness

Image
SCEAD foundation has worked for the past two decades to spread awareness on the importance of education for children. Often children of low income families get pulled out of school for the smallest reason because the parents are not aware of the many programs available for these children, from free education to food and provisions for books and uniforms. project Date January /February  2017 Our volunteers tirelessly visit the slums to share information and increase awareness. Along with education we at SCEAD have also  started a project where we share with these families the many benefits of applying for an Aadhar Card.

AFTER SCHOOL EACH ONE TEACH ONE

Image
AFTER SCHOOL  EACH ONE TEACH ONE JOIN US BE A VOLUNTEER "Each one ,teach one". This line has inspired many and it inspired us that it is our moral responsibility as educated youths to teach children and make a difference in their life. We ( Radhika, Abhinandan and Vijay) volunteered to teach in SCEAD Foundation adopted  school.  It gave us immense satisfaction in sharing our knowledge with the children in the school. We began our interaction with  children in knowing what their ambitions are in life. Further we even spoke about how important is cleanliness and hygiene. To our surprise these children were well aware of the advantages that proper hygiene provides but it was necessary to motivate them to maintain clean surroundings and throw the garbage in the dustbins. It was really good experience and we are sure that our combined effort will definitely make a difference in their lives and motivate them to accomplish their goals.
